Ten miles off of mid-coast Maine, Monhegan has a history of active lobstering and a varied landscape that has attracted many plein air artists from the 19th century onward, including Jamie Wyeth and Rockwell Kent who both lived on the island. Two-thirds of the island is preserved land with 17 miles of hiking trails (requiring good hiking shoes) out to the highest headlands on the eastern seaboard. To find your way, pick up a trail map at various places throughout your journey to and on the island.
